Over the past 5 years, there has been an overwhelming trend of companies moving their software to the cloud and selling it as subscription services. Microsoft is making this move with Office, which will now be sold as “Office 365”. The subscription will cost $100 per year and will allow you to activate Office on 5 different devices. You can still outright purchase the software (for $140), so it will be interesting to see if consumers opt for the new subscription. Personally I think Office subscriptions make a lot of sense for business users, but I’m not completely sold on paying $100 per year for software I’ve grown used to purchasing infrequently (if ever) for personal use. Google Docs is still free! Note: if you stop paying for the subscription, you lose access to the service.
